Foundation Board Member Recognized As Quiet Hero At 25th Anniversary Event

1/25/2019

“Devote yourself to your community around you and devote yourself to creating something that gives you purpose and meaning.” - Mitch Albom

While many of us are challenged with giving the proverbial time, talent and treasure, there are those who with grace and kindness touch lives every day and inspire the rest of us to what is possible. The Foundation for Thomas Health is fortunate to have amongst us someone who leads by example and prefers to do so quietly and behind the scenes to the benefit of our community.

Lisa Dundervill  has served on the board of directors for The Foundation for 6 years and it is during that time that she learned of a volunteer opportunity that has provided her great meaning. Lisa is a Rocker in Thomas Memorial Hospital Newborn Intensive Care Unit. As a mother of three grown children, Dundervill has filled her extra time helping those in need including providing the extra attention to our youngest patients in the earliest days of their lives.

Trained by the NICU’s Nursing Staff, Lisa has become an experienced Rocker often sharing her wisdom with others and is particularly moved by the needs of the most vulnerable infants – those suffering with Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS). Due to the growing population these infants, dedicated volunteers like Lisa are more important than ever. According to Heather Fouch, OB/Newborn Services Nursing Director, NAS infants require a different environment who spend an average of 17 days hospitalized as compared to 3 days for a NICU baby. Volunteers like Lisa provide the support and nurturing through an extra set of hands that makes all the difference to these patients.

When Lisa is not with her family she is volunteering her time either here at Thomas Memorial Hospital with her babies or as an active member on the Foundation’s Gala committee having served as a event co-chair and chair of the successful annual benefit auction. She finds time weekly to give back through Meals on Wheels knowing that it is the most basic of human needs that mean the most.  For her quiet kindness and thoughtful giving, we honor her as a Quiet Hero.
