2016 Annual Report
What does it take to build a culture of health? Vision, leadership, commitment, courage, resources, dedication, and knowledge are just a few answers to the complex issues facing our community’s health challenges. Our Community history is rich with examples of these qualities
In 1946 following the war, local citizens, in a bold move to serve the needs of its community, raised money door to door in South Charleston to open Herbert J. Thomas Memorial Hospital in 1946.

Years before that, in 1913, Saint Francis Hospital was first organized by the Sisters of Saint Joseph who went on to establish their first medical staff in 1930. They continued to implement and refine a vision that would become synonymous with comprehensive, faith-based healthcare in downtown Charleston.

Our community hospitals have always been viewed as valuable assets in addressing the healthcare needs of the community. Today, given the challenges of modern day medicine, that role takes on even more importance. The members of our community are living in the midst of an immense transition. Healthcare has evolved into a model that faces challenges, different from any we have experienced in our combined 170 years of service.

In the midst of such profound change, The Foundation for Thomas Health, which links the humanitarian efforts of the people of the greater Kanawha Valley to the mission of Thomas Health is more important than ever. In this annual report we highlight the ways the community and your hospital system, working through The Foundation, came together to make wonderful things happen.

None of this would be possible without the dedication and support of the many community donors, volunteers and employees – some of whom have family legacies that share in the history of our organization.
Good health remains a foundation for our quality of life – something all West Virginians value. Healthcare today extends beyond the walls of the hospital and into the community as we work collaboratively to find solutions to the health challenges facing our generation and the next.

Foundation support provides ways to ensure all patients receive top quality medical care. We are so grateful to you, our donors, for helping to create and support our committed team of caregivers. You are helping our doctors, nurses and every employee who touches the lives of thousands – whether patients are facing an urgent need, a devastating disease or seeking to improve their quality of life. At Thomas Health we pride ourselves in knowing that you’ll be treated like a real person, by dedicated, compassionate health professionals in a warm, caring environment.

On behalf of The Foundation’s board of directors, our volunteers and staff thank you for your generous partnership and support. As medical care advances, we are committed to supporting the initiatives of Thomas Health – for you, for loved ones, for every person in the community. Philanthropy does make a difference in the health of our community. Please help continue to make this possible with your charitable contributions to The Foundation.
